The Veterinary Voices Hiking Group had another successful trip into the beautiful countryside with their Eryri (Snowdonia) Navigation Event, run by Robyn Lowe and Paul Horwood.
The 3 day event started in Trawsfynydd, where the team met for breakfast and spent two hours on 'Navigation Theory' led by Paul Horwood, Veterinary Surgeon, learning about OS Maps, distance, time, route planning, using a compass, doing bearings and back bearings and more.

The team were split into groups of 3 to plan one ‘leg’ each, and were then tasked with an afternoon walking Llyn Trawsfynydd and leading the team around their leg. This allowed the teams to practice the theory in a safe and risk free manner. During this time, the team also practiced ‘pacing’, learning what is ‘normal’ for them for a 100m distance, to help with navigation when there is limited visibility or in areas that are changeable and micro-navigation is required.
With the help of Duggan Vet Group, and Rhys Jones, the team all received a backpack, compass, thermos, first aid kit, head torch, waterproof bag, hat and more. This was part of an ‘pay it forward’ initiative to ensure that all members had the right kit to get out and about to explore safely after the event, but it also meant that if members already had some of the kit, they could ‘pay it forward’ to someone else who wants to start on their adventures - causing a domino effect of supporting the community to get out and about for our physical and mental health.

Day two the team tackled Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), for some this was their first mountain summit, and they were supported by the more experienced members of the team. It was incredible to see the progress and determination of the team, especially after they got to the snowline and the ground became more slippery underfoot! The team even enjoyed a fresh (cold!) water dip in the corries around the Miners Path.
Day three was led by two experienced community members, and saw the team hiking Moel Siabod, a grade 1 scramble. Making their way through field and woodland, the team had the option of two routes to the summit, catering for a mix of experience and ability.
The Veterinary Voices Hiking Group was set up to help forge connection, tackle isolation and loneliness and to grow the confidence of our community so they could go outside and enjoy the great outdoors safely, which can improve our physical and mental wellness.
Thank you to everyone who supports the initiative, and especially to Duggan who helped support the packs on this event.
